Born in Roscoe, Texas, Walter Richburg completed his B.S. in agricultural economics at Texas A&M University in 1965. During his time at Texas A&M, he was a member of the Freshman Agricultural Society; Agricultural Economics Club; Alpha Zeta Honor Society; Vice President of the Agricultural Council; and President of his dormitory. Other honors included the Agricultural Economics Department Outstanding Senior Award and Who’s Who Among Students of American Universities and Colleges. Following graduation from A&M, he received his Master of Science degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University.
Mr. Richburg began his professional agricultural finance career in 1967 as the Vice President and Agricultural Officer for First Victoria National Bank. In 1973, he moved to the Continental National Bank of Fort Worth where he was immediately delegated the responsibility of Manager of Correspondent Bank Departments. His love of agriculture and upwardly-bound momentum then led him to the J A Ranch to manage operations at the Clarendon location from 1974-1976. Next, he settled in Uvalde as the President, CEO, Chairman of the Board, Executive Vice President, Trust Officer, and Director of the NBC Bank for 14 years. Beginning in 1990, he became the national Managing Director of Farm & Ranch Management at Bank One, now known as JP Morgan Chase, in Fort Worth.
Mr. Richburg’s exemplary career in the banking industry was never enough to satisfy his appetite for involvement. His commitment to Texas agriculture began in Victoria as director of the South Texas Cotton and Grain Association and then to membership, and later chair, of the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Division of the Agricultural Committee of Texas Bankers Association. He also served as a member of the Victoria County Program Building Committee for Beef Cattle; chaplain and chairman of the Outstanding Young Farmers Organization; director of the Victoria Livestock Show; on the Agricultural Committee in the local Kiwanis Club; and chair of the Agricultural Division in the Victoria Chamber of Commerce. In Uvalde, he became the director and announcer of the Uvalde County Livestock show; was a member of the Uvalde School Board for two terms; was president of the Uvalde Athletic Booster Club; president of the Rotary Club; and a member of the Executive Committee and the Finance Committee for the South Texas Agricultural Research Program. In 1985, he was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce. In recent years, he has served as president of the Fort Worth Farm and Ranch Club and, since 1998, has served as the superintendent for the Fort Worth Stock Show.
Mr. Richburg maintains a steadfast commitment to action and improvement at Texas A&M University. He served as an active program member of the Texas Agricultural Credit Conference during the early 70s; joined the Texas A&M Agricultural Development Council in 1993; and was chair in 1997. Under his guidance, the Council assisted the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in reaching new goals and expanded horizons. His devotion is also evident in his community, church, and home. With his wife, Jerita, he enjoys outdoor activities, grandchildren, and service through his church in Fort Worth.
