A native of Taylor, Texas (Williamson County), the late Dr. Carl Anderson holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M and an M.S. from Louisiana State University, all in agricultural economics. He joined the Extension Service in 1978 after serving as senior economist in agricultural research with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. During an exemplary career with Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Dr. Anderson has been noted for developing educational programs and materials on cotton marketing and policy as well as with working with other major crops produced in Texas. In addition, he was responsible for developing agricultural outlook information and for collecting and analyzing economic data concerning Texas agriculture. He was coordinator of the section on “Agriculture in Texas” for the Texas Almanac.
Dr. Anderson has been influential in developing innovative educational programs in cotton marketing and policy implications and has been instrumental in developing numerous innovative Extension programs. In 1984, when agricultural commodity options were reintroduced, he collaborated with other extension and research marketing specialists at Texas A&M University and with professionals at the New York Cotton Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade, and Chicago Mercantile Exchange to develop a series of marketing education programs to teach producers, lenders, and agribusinesses how to use futures and options markets to improve their risk management skills. The two-day workshops on cotton, grain, and livestock pricing were presented statewide at over 100 county meetings, and educational materials were shared with extension educators in other southern states. Today, versions of those materials are still used and provided much of the background work for the state- and nationally-recognized award-winning Master Marketer Program, developed in Texas, during the mid-90s. Dr. Anderson continues to help with further developments of the Master Marketer Program, is one of the top-rated speakers on the program, and is contacted his expertise and assistance in marketing and policy interpretation by leaders for commodity and farm organizations and by the news media. From 1986 to 1993, Anderson served on the Board of Managers of the New York Cotton Exchange in recognition of contributions made in the marketing of cotton.
Because of his role as an effective Extension educator, he has received many awards for outstanding service to the Texas cotton industry. They include the Superior Service Award, Texas Agricultural Extension Service (1988); Certificate of Appreciation, Texas Farm Bureau Commodity Division (1989); Award in Excellence of Texas A&M University for Extension Education (1990); State Mid-Career Award, Alpha Zeta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi (1990); State Distinguished Service Award, Epsilon Sigma Phi (1991); The Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Texas A&M University Faculty (1992); 9th Annual Hoechst-Roussel and Cotton Foundation Cotton Extension Education Award (1994); Leader of the Year in Service to Texas Agriculture, The Progressive Farmer (1996); Lifetime Achievement Award, Southern Agricultural Economics Association (1998); The Texas A&M University System Regents Fellow Service Award, (2001); and, Texas Cooperative Extension Superior Service Award, Distinguished Career Category, (2003). Other recognitions include induction into the LSU Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Alumni Association Outstanding Academic Alumni in 2001 as well as the Certificate of Retirement from Governor Rick Perry’s Constituents Office in 2004.
Dr. Anderson passed away in August 2014. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, who resides in Bryan.
