Biography
Jeff Steen is a native of Cuero, Texas, home of the Fighting Gobblers. During his formative years, his jobs included general ranch work, driving a liquid feed truck, working for the local large animal vet, a job on the kill floor of the local packing plant, and a summer lifeguard at the Cuero Municipal swimming pool. He was active in FFA and served as Chapter President during his senior year.
Jeff graduated from Texas A&M University in 1980 with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Economics. While at Texas A&M, he was a founding member and the first president of Texas A&M University’s Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was active in student government, serving as a student senator. In his sophomore year, he was awarded the Star American Farmer Degree from the National Future Farmers of America. After working in Washington, D.C. for United States Senators John Tower (TX) and John Glenn (OH), Jeff attended law school and earned his Juris Doctorate from the South Texas College of Law, where he served as the Chief Justice of the Honor Court. He later served as the President of the Alumni Association and on the Board of Trustees for the Law School.
Jeff has been involved in the energy business in various capacities since 1978, starting his career as a petroleum landman. Jeff spent more than 33 years in various executive leadership positions with four publicly-traded energy service companies: Oil States International, Schlumberger, Grant Prideco, and Camco International. Currently, Jeff owns and manages Steen Interests, a family enterprise that includes real estate, ranching, and oil and gas assets in Texas and New Mexico. Jeff also is heavily involved in creative endeavors where he has participated in the development and production of 23 feature films and documentaries, the theatrical stage production of “Rear Window, and is the lead producer of the award-winning international podcast, “Pack One Bag”.
Jeff is active in the community and serves on numerous philanthropic and charitable boards. He currently serves as the chairman of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum Endowment, the managing trustee for the Steen Family Foundation, and a trustee for the Houston Museum of Natural Science. In addition, he is a member of the Founders Circle of the Sun Valley Film Festival. Previous board service includes Girls Inc., The Diaper Foundation, The Juvenile Diabetes Association, South Texas College of Law, Cancer Counseling, Inc., and Harris County Improvement District #3 in Houston.
He has been active as a former student of Texas A&M University. He is currently The Association of Former Students 2025 Chair of the Board. Before his work on the Board of Directors, he served The Association as a representative at large.
Jeff and his wife, Barbara ’97, reside in Houston and have two sons, Jake ’19 and Fletcher. Jake is a practicing attorney in Austin specializing in Water Law, and young Fletch is an energetic Aggie fan that is a left-handed pitcher on his 7th grade baseball team in Houston.
